Today I’m going to share a legend<\/strong> with you: one that isn’t new, but was born at the dawn of time.<\/p>\n

It comes from the Macuxi tribe<\/strong>, native to the Brazilian Amazon, one of our planet\u2019s lungs and now under threat<\/strong> from deforestation, forest degradation, wildfires and other dangers placing biodiversity and climate balance at serious risk.<\/p>\n

The main driver behind this destruction? The spread of intensive monoculture farming such as soy.<\/p>\n

But if there\u2019s one community that has always protected the Environment and understands the secrets of the land, it\u2019s the Indigenous peoples<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That’s why I’m sharing this legend with you, coinciding with World Environment Week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Macuxi woman once fled her beautiful maloca on the Surumu River with the son of a Taulipang chief.<\/em><\/p>\n

They were never parted.<\/em><\/p>\n

If he went fishing, she fished too.<\/em><\/p>\n

If she bathed in the river, he bathed too.<\/em><\/p>\n

If he went hunting, she hunted too.<\/em><\/p>\n

If she walked in the countryside, he walked too.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nine months later, the woman gave birth.<\/em><\/p>\n

But the child was stillborn, and the woman could neither stand nor move.<\/em><\/p>\n

She no longer had strength in her legs to walk.<\/em><\/p>\n

From that day on, he carried his beloved everywhere on his back.<\/em><\/p>\n

One day, they went to eat mangaba and muruci fruit.<\/em><\/p>\n

The sun set. The moon rose. Then the sun rose. Then again the moon.
And so it went on, for days and days and days. <\/em><\/p>\n

The two lovers never returned.<\/em><\/p>\n

Long after, in the place where the man\u2019s bow and arrows were found along with the woman\u2019s earrings, bracelet and loincloth, a Taj\u00e1 plant grew, with a hitherto unknown vibrant green colour.<\/em><\/p>\n

That plant, the Tamba-Taj\u00e1, is said to have sprung from the lovers’ bodies, with leaves resembling the female genital form and the stem that of a man.<\/em><\/p>\n
